After seven years working as a psychologist with hospitalized patients, a two-minute meeting on the television gave me a new direction in my life. It was the first time I saw Wellington Nogueira and heard the name of the Doutores da Alegria. What came after led to the consolidation of this extremely important meeting. A strong desire and a series of events led me to the work of these artists in hospitals. After five minutes watching Dr. Zinho at work, I was sure that I was experiencing an important event that would somehow transform me. Since then, I have researched and described in page after page what healthy outcomes can result from the meeting of a clown with a child.During those years working in hospitals, I had felt the lack of a more effective approach to the relations with and the care of patients. Health professionals are prepared very well to deal with disease, some of them even with sick people, but very few of them know how to deal with people and with health. There is a consensus about the fact that the relations within the hospital impact an individual’s recuperation. In spite of this, the academic preparation of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and psychologists is focused on what does not work and on relating to this.We aim our perception at the disease. With a bit of luck, at the patient. Relations with patients are structured based on this paradigm. There is a very subtle, but essential difference in focusing our attention on what is healthy in the patient and stimulating relations based on this criterion. What I found to be revolutionary in the work of these artists was the enormous desire to relate to that part of the child that wants to play. The belief that, no matter how serious the clinical condition of the patient, there is a healthy essential side which may be touched. In this work I discovered art as a vehicle for the development of health. Art creates a field for understanding phenomena which include a series of factors which are beyond linear thought and the logic of facts. Art can put together in the same space contradictory or repressed ideas. Magic, fantasy, emotion, all those factors that are so important for human equilibrium have their place in the dimension of art. Through art we may encounter a power for communication which goes far beyond words. An example of this is my use of the children’s drawings, before and after the artists presentations, as a research instrument. The communication of the results by this means of expression amplified the possibilities for comprehending the effects of the interaction between the Doutores and the children. Using the art of language, by telling stories based on the daily life in a hospital and the routine of the artists, this book is intended to transmit the essence of what happens when a clown is set loose in a hospital. Certain key words in the text indicate conceptual information and research results which are presented in parallel. The result, expressed in this work, tells of a course run in consequence of a few minutes of colored images on the TV. Three years of work resulted from these few minutes.
